Toy Surge Group’s, Julia Turgeon, CEO, announces new company division, Toy Surge Interactive, a division that focuses solely on designing and coding children’s book and game apps specifically COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) compliant and family friendly.

The first children’s book app based on the bestselling children’s picture book series by Julia Abby Thomas: A Monster Stole My Shoe, will be arriving sometime in the summer of 2015.

“This is a big step for us,” says Turgeon. “We have been focused on publishing books and activity books for 3-7 year-olds for only the past two years. There are usually a lot of hands involved in the development of any app for the ios and Android market and we’re just a company made of two. Because it was such a big undertaking, we had to really focus and ask ourselves where do we want to go from here? It made the most sense to start developing apps since we are capable of doing all our illustrations, design and coding in-house.”

Turgeon says that quality and trust is important. “It is how we got here in the first place. Parents have come to our online store in the past for quality toys and because we were a trusted store online. It is the same with our apps. I know of a lot of popular apps that continuously sell add-ons to kids. The app is targeting children 3-7 years of age. I don’t agree with it even though there is a “protection” feature involved where a code has to be entered by a parent in order to make a purchase.

“Our apps will be one-time fee only and no hidden costs or upgrades or any links that lead outside the app itself. We have a strict privacy policy and I think that’s why we have been a trusted online retailer ever since we opened in 2010.”

Despite the big undertaking for such a small company, Turgeon says she doesn’t want to stop there. “I have even bigger plans,” but growing too fast for any small company can be scary that’s why Turgeon says she is “pacing herself.”

“I have lots of future plans that I want to get all done now and creating quality children’s apps is just the fourth chapter of like ten in the Toy Surge book!” she laughs. “But realize I don’t have the manpower to help me get there just yet. For the most part, it is just me running a great part of the company.”

When asked if she feels overwhelmed adding what seems like a bunch of new hats to her arsenal of hats. “Of course you get those second thoughts. Am I going in the right direction? Am I growing too fast? Too slow? But that’s business. Business is all about risk. You can’t be afraid of it. You have to go with your gut despite the unknown.”
